Edinburgh winters can be chilly, damp, and sometimes downright unforgiving. Whether you’re new to the city or just looking for practical advice to combat the cold and mould, here’s how to stay warm and keep your home comfortable this winter.

When Renting, Choose Wisely

Before you move into a flat, prioritize properties with double-glazed windows—or triple-glazed if you can find them. These insulate your home, reduce drafts, and make a noticeable difference in energy efficiency. Flats with proper insulation will also help you save on heating costs.

Understanding the Energy Crisis

The UK is currently experiencing an energy crisis, with gas and electricity prices remaining high. During the winter, monthly electric and gas costs can exceed £100 a month for a one-bedroom flat. For many, keeping the heat on 24/7 isn’t an option. Managing your energy use wisely can help you stay warm without breaking the bank.

What to Do If Your Flat Feels Cold:

Adjust Your Heating Schedule

Heating your home strategically is key. Set your heating to come on:

  • Just before you wake up and during your morning routine.

  • In the evening when you’re winding down and getting ready for bed.

  • If you can afford it, a midday burst of heat can help maintain a steady temperature in the home.

This targeted approach can make a difference in comfort while keeping costs manageable.

Portable Warmth Options

  1. Hot Water Bottles- These are an affordable way to stay warm. Use them to heat your sheets before bed or keep one close while working. Just follow the safety instructions to prevent burns or leaks.

  2. Electric Under-Bed Heaters/Mattress Toppers-These are a great upgrade for personalized warmth. Each side of the bed can be set to different temperatures for maximum comfort.

  3. Electric Blankets- Widely used and effective, but they tend to last about a year before wearing out, so budget for replacements as needed.

  1. Ensure Radiators Are On- Many radiators have a knob at the base—make sure it’s turned up. Check your thermostat as well, as it may control the maximum temperature for the entire house.

  2. Bleed Your Radiators- If your radiators feel warm at the bottom but cold at the top, they may need bleeding to remove trapped air. Radiator keys can be purchased online or at a local hardware store.

Insulate Your Home

  1. Add Rugs and Carpet Padding- Use rugs throughout your home to trap warmth. For extra insulation, buy a roll of carpet padding from B&Q or Amazon, cut it to size, and place it under your rugs.

  2. Draft Excluders- Invest in draft excluders for doors and windows. Rolled-up towels or even leftover packing paper with duct tape can work in a pinch. For front doors, consider hanging a tension rod with thermal curtains to keep cold air out.

Portable heaters can provide quick, localized warmth. Check your lease agreement for any restrictions and follow safety guidelines carefully.

Managing Moisture to Prevent Mould

Damp conditions can lead to mould, so moisture management is essential.

  1. Dehumidifiers- Place dehumidifiers in rooms where you dry laundry to reduce condensation and prevent mould growth.

  2. Heated Drying Racks- Electric drying racks are an excellent alternative to traditional air drying. They speed up the process and reduce moisture buildup in your home.

  3. Ventilation- Keep windows cracked open in bathrooms and kitchens when cooking or showering. Use extractor fans if available to reduce humidity levels.

File a Maintenance Request If Necessary

If your flat is cold due to structural issues like drafts, poor insulation, or malfunctioning equipment, notify your landlord or property manager. They are legally obligated to address problems that make your home uninhabitable.

Final Tips

  • Layer Up Indoors: Stay cozy with blankets, warm socks, and layered clothing. Merino wool options are lightweight, warm, and comfortable, even when damp.

  • Seal Windows: Consider temporary plastic insulation film for windows to block drafts if you can’t fix them permanently.

Winter in Edinburgh doesn’t have to be miserable. By following these tips and using a mix of affordable solutions and smart heating habits, you can keep your home warm and mould-free. Stay cozy, Edinburgh!
