For the first edition of our 'Neighborhood Spotlight' series I want to discuss Canonmills. Canonmills is a charming neighborhood that offers a mix of convenience and character. Although it's not as frequently discussed as other areas, it boasts decent connections to transportation and amenities. A highlight is its proximity to several key spots: it's adjacent to Leith Walk and Newtown—both are uphill walks, but a flat and easy stroll to Stockbridge.
The neighborhood boasts pubs like One Canonmills, a pizza place, a few cozy cafes, a bike repair shop, a beer nook, and a full-size Tesco. It's also a quick walk to many other fabulous eateries. For those who enjoy climbing, the bouldering gym Alien Bloc is nearby, and there are great bike trails such as the North Edinburgh Path Network and the Water of Leith Walkway.
The average flat price for a 1-bedroom is £1,060 (though currently several £850s are listed), while a 2-bedroom averages £1,300 per month. By bus, the University of Edinburgh is approximately 30 minutes away, Edinburgh Napier University is around 35 minutes, and Heriot-Watt University is about 45 minutes.
From friends who have lived there, Canonmills is known for not having the intense community/village feel of some other neighborhoods, which can be both a positive and a negative. It's a friendly area, easy to get out and about if you enjoy being active in the city. You’re near the center of things but not constantly overwhelmed by tourists.
If you’re looking for a flat in the Canonmills area, try centering your search around postcode EH7 4EN.
